Being fervently paranoid, I agree that caution is the correct path here.
One thing that I found interesting is that no one mentioned the fact
that
Ancestry.com /MyFamily.com/The Generations Network, or whatever its
name is this week, has certainly not been shy about sudden decapitations
of competitors and customers in the past. They bought out and promptly
guillotined several genealogical software programs, including Ultimate
Family Tree, Family Origins, Generations, and Ancestry Family Tree, not
to mention the periodical Genealogical Computing, which has no successor
in print.
You seem to have summed it up quite nicely:

In my opinion, the monopolization of genealogy is not a good thing
for researchers.
