Darrel,
I personally haven't ever used the CART program. At one time I had heard
that there were some problems with it, but I don't know if they've been
corrected. I believe that it's what they are using over at the USGenWeb
Census Project, and if so, it seems to be working for them. Only problem
is, I think they only have templates available for certain years (but 1850
and 1860 *are* covered, I think). We would have to come up with something
different for our state censuses.
I'm pretty sure that Jim Powell used Excel for the 1935 Gilchrist state
census - if we asked him nicely, he may let us use his template. :)
(Jim...?) For those who have worked on the 1885 or 1945 state censuses,
how did you enter your information?
Deborah wondered if others are using a spreadsheet for entering the
information. In converting files to text format for the Archives, I use
Excel over and over again. I find it very useful for maintaining column
width and alignment. If anyone has questions about using Excel for
entering data, I can try to help.
If anyone else (either a CC or other volunteer) is working on Florida state
or federal census transcriptions or indexes, please post to the list the
year(s) and county(ies) you are doing. I'll try to keep a running tab on
who's doing what so your hard work isn't duplicated by someone else!
One more thing...according to a post on another list I'm on, Florida's
state censuses were done in the following years:
1790, 1825, 1837, 1845, 1855, 1865, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915,
1925, 1935, 1945, 1955
But the only surviving *statewide* schedules that I know of are 1885, 1935,
and 1945. I believe there are single counties of many of the other years,
but don't know what they are or where to find them. Anyone know any
different?
