[ I'm resending this to the FLGen-L list because I think I had the wrong
address when I sent it out earlier this month ]
** Report on the Status of the FLGenWeb Archives Project **
**
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/fl/flfiles.htm **
We added a lot of files this month, due in large part to Mr. Raymond H.
Banks' generous donation of his 1917-1918 Civilian Draft Registration
files. These files are chock-full of information about the men who
registered - nearly 24 million nationwide - including date and place of
birth, and other notes. To facilitate research, we see these even for
counties not in existence at that time. For now we have online all Florida
counties that he has completed, but he will start on the next batch later
this month, so keep checking back if your county's file isn't there yet.
We have a new logo for the FLGenWeb Archives, thanks to Pam Reid! Pam
heads up the USGenWeb Tombstone Transcription Project at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/ Check out her site for some great tips
and for information on how to get Boy Scouts involved in cemetery surveys.
Also this month we have a new look for the FLGenWeb Archives page. The
first thing you may notice is the color change. More importantly, each
county has a link, or the potential to link, to its own *separate* county
page. This will improve loading time and allow county coordinators to link
directly to the files that are pertinent to their counties. If a county
has at least one file in the archives, you can reach the direct address to
its table of contents page at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/fl/toc/countyname.htm.
Feel free to link directly to a county's table of contents, but remember
that the address for the search engine is linked on the *main Florida
archives* page only. We are hoping that the search engine index will be
updated any day now, as the folks at RootsWeb have been striving to
purchase new equipment to handle the size of the index we have created!!!
So please be patient, but check back often.
Here are the new files that were donated during the month of January, 1998.
I hope I got them all listed. Please keep up the donations!
