Hi Everyone,
Just to clarify things a bit, linking to the archives has absolutely
nothing to do with Ancestry's stunt. Ancestry spidered the entire
Intenet, including sites owned by AHGN and the Political Graveyard
to mention a few. There is an good analysis of the whole debacle at
Eastman's Genealogy Newsletter. It starts
here:

and continues
here:

Read the comments too.
The bottom line is that Ancestry has shut down the collection, even
though some people say they can still find some of the sites when
they search Ancestry.
I have been following this closely and am appalled at Ancestry's lack
of integrity. But in the end, they seem to be trying to do the right
thing, but only after much protest.
Also, for the record, any CC is free to link to any data in the
Florida Archives. In addition, if you obtain permission from the
submitter, you can post that data on your county web site. I
sincerely doubt that any researcher would deny you that permission,
but it is their decision, not mine. I would not use another persons
data without permission and giving credit. Nor should Ancestry or anyone.
If you haven't looked at the archives lately, I encourage you to do
so.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/fl/flfiles.htm There is an
exceptional amount of information there. Don't forget to look at the
Multi-County General Files and the other USGenWeb Projects.
My local genealogical society has put the entire census for Brevard
County online in the Census Project. Not transcriptions, the
images! And it is freely available for anyone to use.
I also think a Cremains page is an excellent idea. I don't care if
it is on the county websites or in the archives -- as long as the
information is preserved.
