Mary Ellen,
In Section 27, T6N, R23W, I have been shown a grave with a marble marker at
the very top of a high hill (called the Indian Mound?). The name Melissa
Cawthon is on the marker. There is a Bible verse, but no dates. I
understand that the property is now owned by a timber company which has
recently cleared and burned in the area, allowing much easier access to the
site. One of the local residents who is now in his seventies recalls seeing
the cemetery when he was a younger. He thinks it was at least 1/2 an acre in
size with many graves, possibly more than 30. Therefore, I believe it is
possible that it could have been a community cemetery, not just a family one.
Within the last few years the grave of a baby or child was still easily
identified, but the wooden marker disappeared when the controlled burn jumped
the fire line.
This area, which was in Walton County prior to 1915, was known to have been
home to some of the Cawthon's in the mid 1800's. I am questioning whether or
not this could be the mysterious "Eureka" cemetery that I have been searching
for. Melissa Hutchison Cawthon died about 1862. In a span from 1855-1873
there were several other members of the family that died, whose graves have
never been found. One obituary listed the burial in Eureka Cemetery in
Walton County. Other families in neighboring sections were the Cook's and
the Davis'.
I am bringing this to your attention because you may know of someone who may
recall the location of this cemetery and whether or not they know of other
graves, and to get it's location documented so that perhaps it can be one day
be restored, or at the very least, preserved.
Thanks,
Linda Clark
