We have had great response to the USGenWeb Archives Project in Florida, but
lately there has been some confusion. I would like to point out a few
things to help clear that up. I've also included some URLs that you may
find useful if you'd like more information about a particular subject.
1) The FLGenWeb Archives is *not* the same as the FLGenWeb Project. They
both fall under the umbrella of the USGenWeb Project, but the projects have
different goals. Namely, the Archives serves as an ftp repository for
donated transcribed files, such as censuses, deeds, and indexes. The
FLGenWeb Project, on the other hand, is the place to go if you're looking
for information about doing genealogical research in a particular county.
Each county has its own volunteer and you will find vastly different levels
of information on each site.

2) I am the volunteer coordinator for the FLGenWeb Archives. My "job"
entails accepting data files for placement in the archives. Please note
that this doesn't mean you can send me photocopies of pages so I can type
them up! While I appreciate your generosity and eagerness to help, I
simply don't have the time nor the resources to do this. There are two
reasons we don't use scanned images: the search engine cannot read the
words on them, and the disk space that they command is extremely great
compared to text.
3) Please make sure that you don't donate copyrighted information, unless
you have (and include) written permission from the copyright holder for
his/her information to be put in the Archives. Technically, this probably
includes newspaper obituaries. This is a bit of a gray area. The
exception to this rule is that books published prior to 1923 are now in the
public domain and may be digitized without the author's permission. Also,
just because there is no copyright notice on the item doesn't mean it's not
copyrighted! Always assume that it is.

I hope this helps clear up some of the confusion out there.
We are really making some headway on this project - let's all try to donate
a file this month!!
