Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Dear Members,
Per Darrel's request a Message board system has been created at
http://flgenwebdir.proboards46.com/index.cgi
It will be linked to the FLGenWeb Project Pages later today or tomorrow. Should any of you like to have your own county board that you are the moderator for, please let me know and one will be created for you. At this time, there is a General FLorida Board, a surname board, and a Citrus County board.
A couple of volunteers will be necessary to act as modrators and administrators of this board system. Please contact me if you have an interest in either owning a county board or acting as a moderator or admin. Suggestions for other boards will also be entertained.

I will get going on contacting the various newspapers again for permission to use their obituaries next week. If anyone would like to assist with this venture, please contact me. All help offered will be gladly accepted. Help is needed with contacting newspapers for permission and for harvesting the obituaries.
Should you want to volunteer to contact the newspapers, I can help you with who and how to approach them and what guarantees we can offer the Paper.
Harvesting obits can be done weekly or monthly depending how long the newspaper archives them. All harvesting requires is: copy and paste the obits verbatm into a word processor page, save with mewspaper name and datein the file name, attach it to an e-mail and send to me.
Right now I have 3 volunteers to harvest, 2 of which are not members of the FLGenWeb Project, they are personal friends of mine who are just lending me a helping hand and 1 cc who will harvest from her local paper as soon as permission is granted by the publication.
If we can gain permission from enough newspapers, this can become a major genealogy research source and draw many people to our sites.

A Quick Review of the Contest Rules:
The logo must include the text: "FLGenWeb"
The logo must be resizable to a maximum height of 100 pixels for
Google Search, and 48 x 48 pixels for the favicon (the favicon does
not have to include text but should be easily recognizable and distinctive).
We did not set a maximum size, but the usual consideration for dialup
users was a guide.
No artist names will be included during the contest period. By
entering the logo in the contest, the artist grants FLGenWeb the
perpetual use of the logo if it is one of the contest winners. At
the end of the contest, the winning artists will receive credit,
kudos and our eternal thanks. The deadline for logo submissions was
12:01 AM, February 1, 2008.
Hi William,
We have never had bylaws other than those of the USGenWeb. When we Inc. it
was necessary to do that first. Our membership voted to Inc. and they will
also vote on the bylaws which will govern the elections from here on and the
rules we will live by. We had to start somewhere. Without the Inc. we were a
non-entity and as such anyone could have taken what we had as Ancestry tried
to do. Now the corp will be the one who will protect us. What a relief.
We had lots of input from our members about what they hoped for with our
Inc. One is to be a 501 (c) (3) which will allow us to get grants as a
nonprofit group. This will allow us more bandwidth for our project pages. We look
forward to increasing our help to others who are searching for information in
Florida. We are looking also for ways to become a repository for many of the
documents pertaining to Florida.
Another idea is to develop classroom lessons that our teachers could use in
encouraging students to become active in genealogy. So far, the teachers
only ask for a couple of generations of names and dates.
As was stated, we are beginning to look at the things the bylaws should
include. I hope you will voice an opinion. The more the merrier.

Uhhh..., please excuse the ignorant new kid on the block, but does this
mean there currently is no bylaws, or are you just proposing to modify
the existing bylaws?
If none exists now, who is eligible to vote on the committee's proposal?
Will passage require approval of 2/3 of those voting or a simple majority?
Will county coordinators have an opportunity to make suggestions to the
committee's proposal?
Thx,
William Zehner

I read the email that said he had been looking at the IRS requirements for
the 501 and guess I jumped the gun and thought he had done that since he had
volunteered. I start with the last email and work backwards. Shame on me.

Greetings, Everyone!!!!
Martin County checking in. All is well; although I'm finding it an exceedingly
slow process not only in getting my FLGenWeb pages converted over to the new
server, but also the webpages for our Martin County Genealogical Society, from
which I draw from for VRs, obits, cemetery, and other important databases for
the Martin Co FLGenWeb. Hang in there with me ... I'll get it done ...
