Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
There is a program at transloader.com that moves the whole site without
having to download it to your own puter first. I tried it to move pages to my
AOL acct. I found I could not. Have been in touch with AOL and they are
working on the problem The fella I spoke with moved pages to somewhere else and
it worked. He said he would put in a trouble shooting memo for me
immediately. Might take up to 48 hours to get an answer.
This can be faster since it moves at the speed of the internet -not my own
computer/provider speed.
Other servers probably won't have the problem I encountered. It had to do
with my password not showing up at transloader.

That is fine Bonnie. There is no race take your time. Everyone will have
sufficient time to move.
A quick tip
1. download all pages to your computer, put them all in 1 folder ( you may
have several folders within that main folder
2. open your html program and open your main page in it
3. highlight a partial url http://www.rootsweb.com/~flcountyname/
dont highlight any other part of the url
4. on the menu bar of your html program click edit, then find/replace
5. replacement text is http://www.flgenhistonline.com/counties/countyname/
( if you have multiple counties your initial folder name would come after
counties like this
http://www.flgenhistonline.com/counties/jeffmadtay/jefferson/ )
choose the global replacement option or change all pages in this folder and
voilla' all the urls will be changed.
It took me 30 minutes to move one county of mine, granted it only has about
60 pages in it but it was very quick.

List Members,
The naming of your main page to INDEX, would create a problem should there be a server crash. All of the county data is automatically backed within our server system and when recreating the county files, this would easier to recreate if using other than INDEX as the name of your county page.
Thus the recreation of the FLGenWeb pages using this standard would be completed in minute/hours instead of days/weeks.

I had mine by county name for years and thought I was doing it wrong.
And I just changed it, but have actually kept both named sites up.
Someone up there is looking out for me.

I want to thank all the CC's who have moved in so far. As soon as we can, we will have the new FLGENWEB Gateway up and running. If you have moved in, please do not at this time remove your material from RW. I believe Darrel intends to pull the plug on the whole RW site himself.
Also please remember your MAIN PAGE MAY NOT BE NAMED index.html. You will also need to send me the URL of the new naim page so I can change the RW page t direct visitors to the new location.
I have been asked why we can't name our main pages index.html. The reason for this is practical. In the event of a system crash, restoration of data will be effected faster if we dont have to wade thru 67 pages named index.html and figure out what goes where.
I know it may not make sense to you, but I have been involved in just such a situation and it took us a month to figure out what page went in what folder. The back up engine puts all index pages together, not in indivdual folders. If your main is countyname.html it is readily identifiable by its name. Therefore restoration of operations could take merely hours instead of days or weeks.
I appreciate everyone's compliance with this rule.

Hi Tonia,
you asked: Is there a general statement that we need to put on all the sites
that
states we are have formed our own non-profit group to keep the
information free for public use only.... and so on and so on......?
We can't add anything like that until the Inc. is completed. Then we will
do bylaws and that is where I think the minimum number of rules for the pages
will come into being. For now it's enough for them to be moved.
As I understand it, you can now put on your pages that you have done
graphically a copyright by you on the bottom of those pages. Data can not be
copyrighted but the way it is presented on the page can be. Fresh material you
have written yourself of someone else has can be copyrighted also. Pictures are
copyrightable too.
there is also <meta name="robots" content="noarchive"> that can be added
to the top between the <head> and </head> which is supposed to prevent
some of the copying of the pages. This I have been putting on my page since
the pages were cached behind the for pay site.
Thanks
Fran

I am just on the road the road a little bit right now with work and family. Ownership of elders is a little daughting at times.

That is a correct response, however until a county has finished the move,
there's no need to change the county list link. Also, the new state page is not
completely ready for full activation. When it is ready, the old guard will lock
the gate and secure the key.

I am not Darrel, but I can answer this question. If your site is at
FLGenHistonline, it can not alsay say it is hosted by rootsweb. Thats what
it meant, you may have links to anything genealogy or history related as
always, but if you site url is www.flgenhistonline.com thenyour site is
hosted by FlGenWeb not Rootsweb.

I just left my old site "up" at rootsweb, copied my files to a new web site
folder, and am only working on adding/changing those files that were
transferred to the new folder. That way I don't get confused (and believe
me, I confuse often these days...). I figured when everyone is done
uploading their "new" site, that is when the old guard will lock the gate,
secure the key, and "poof" we are off rootsweb, all at the same time. Does
this sound about right?

Great! Also, shouldn't we be linking to your "new" FLGenWeb home page on the
new flgenhistonline, rather than the "old" rootsweb hosted site?
My site is so huge, I am plugging away with it. I'm sure I'll be the only
one slowing this process down! Wow is it a lot of work!!! Thanks to all of
you heading up this project for all of YOUR hard work!!!
