Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
May I make a suggestion for these rollcalls???
Instead of just saying "we are here", why not also
include a brief summary of what has been done on that
site in the past month? Some folks may need a little
help thinking of ideas on improvements, or of data
sources they haven't considered, etc.
If I'm gonna read 49 messages, I'd like to see them
provide me with 49 ideas (GRIN).
HILLSBOROUGH CO REPORTING IN:
*Currently working on final transcriptions of two
more cemeteries walked by the Greater Brandon
Genealogical Society and donated to the site
*Have added GenConnect forums for the following:
Queries, Biographies, Obituaries, Bible Records,

I hate to keep harping on this one, but I DID set the
list up when I was State CC and my agreement with
Darrel was that the state be kept on an even keel and
not many changes be made in policy, only in keeping
UP with policy, which due to illness I wasn't able to
do in what I considered a timely fashion.
This list was NOT intended as a forum for all the
political doings and undoings of the USGenWeb
Project; once the info is passed on via the State CC
that a problem of one sort or another exists, those
who want to discuss it should be going to the
appropriate list/location to participate. I don't
believe Darrel has changed this policy to my knowledge.
It is the job of the State CC to make the cc's aware
of the discussions, not to host the battleground.
Many folks just don't have TIME for all that. That's
WHY the list and policy were set up in this fashion.
If anyone has a gripe about that, don't gripe at
Darrel;
I AM THE ONE WHO SET THE POLICY AND BUILT THE LIST,
not him.
I set it that way AFTER consulting with the cc's who
were with us at that time. It was NOT an arbitrary
decision solely made on my part, but I thought it was
a sound one. For that same reason, the list was set
up as a "closed" list where the State CC had to
approve anyone subbing to it. This was done so that
folks could express concern/questions about the state
organization at the state level in private (Some
folks were afraid to speak out or ask questions about
their websites etc)
I don't like the way the tone of the list has changed
at ALL. I don't see anyone helping anyone like we
used to with problems, ideas for site info, etc. All
I am seeing in the 49 messages I have to read today
is discussion of things that should be discussed on
one of the other forums.

I did get this from my IL SC as well...when I re-set
up Florida in 1997 I modeled and ran it the way IL
was done and am glad to see Darrel has continued to
keep everyone well informed on the issues.
My only problem with the entire thing is that this
info about Ms. Reed and her affiliation with the Dill
organization was known at the time of the election
yet folks voted for her anyway.
This was partly due to the fact that, in my opinion,
the elections were "rushed" along in a manner that
folks were not given adequate time to research the
backgrounds of everyone running for all the assorted
spots THOROUGHLY before it was time to make a vote.
Now we've got problems on our hands...
Sounds like the US Government to me...

I'd like to comment on this (which backs up Darrel)
When I set this list up it was set up in such a
manner that we, the FLGenWeb Project cc's and sc,
would be able to discuss matters related to our state
IN PRIVATE so that folks would not be afraid to voice
concerns or problems they might be having only with
those in the state organization. It was never
intended as an open forum. USGenWeb Project has
several lists already in place for such discussions,
such as USGenWeb-ALL and regional project lists.
Those interested in discussing the current problems
will find these forums already available to them.
I support Darrel in his comments...

Hello,
My involvement with USGenWeb and FLGenWeb began in late 1996 when I
volunteered to host a page for Alachua County. In the Spring of 1997
responsibility for hosting Putnam County was assumed from her original
host Brett Hope and in Summer 1997 when the 'big push' was on to have
all counties adopted, I volunteered to host their neighbors -- Bradford,
Levy and Marion. I also serve as Listress for FLORIDA-L which was begun
in 1997 while Susie Martin-Rott served as State Coordinator.
Throughout the time of my service to the projects I have marveled at the
sense of community as hundreds of FLGenWeb and thousands of USGenWeb
volunteers, who will probably never meet, work toward the goal of
bringing genealogy resources into the homes of the researchers via the
internet.
I am proud to be a part of FLGenWeb and keep this one thought in mind --
a volunteer gives generously of their time, energy, skill and expertise
to help another --
Melanie
ps - The 'day job' is as Dean of Admissions & Financial Aid at our local
community college in Glendora (southern California) and along with my

Hello fellow genealogists!
Ok.. I'll be brief, promise!!
I began my own genealogy shortly after my mother passed away. My objective and
reasoning was to leave something behind for my two children (one four and one
five). I'm not sure if they'll appreciate inheriting the massive amount of
papers, but-it will show that I have done what I could to create a history for
their futures.
I began assisting Betty with the Jackson County site and finally convinced
myself to take on the responsibility as Washington CC last year. I have been
working on web pages about three years now.
I am a member of the Florida State Genealogy Society and attend its annual
conference.
Prior to motherhood, I was a corporate trainer- focusing on computer,
technical, sales, and management development training.
Not one to just sit on my laurels, I've spent the last five years while
staying home with the kids learning the internet and web page creation/design.
Lately I've created a group to document cemeteries and am working with several
committees of the Abandoned Cemeteries Task Force for possible legislation to
protect our graves/cemeteries in Florida.
Ok.. I'm sure there's more, but I promised to be brief.
Cindy

I only meant if she's truly as bad as she says he is.
However, this is one person's voice. I haven't heard from anyone else about
this - and Pa is generally a talkative bunch :o). Censore in my book does
include reprimanding. I think
impeaching is a strong punishment and don't see how the punishment fits her
crime

Good morning and Hi,
After careful thought and consideration I've decided to write my
"letter".
My name is Barbara Lavin. I am married and am a mother of a wonderful
three year old (Sean). Unlike most of you, I don't live in Florida , I
live in Pennsylvania. I came to the Florida GenWeb Project on July
7,1998 - so I guess that makes me the new kid on the block with ya'll.
I currently host Union County. Which ironically, also seems to be one
of the newer kids on the block.
Besides Union, I host Schuylkill County, Pa., Angus Scotland,
Denbeighshire Wales, Pembrokeshire Wales, County Kildaire Ireland as
well as am the country coordinator for Wales. I also host my own pages
in geocities and xoom. The GenWeb co-ordinating came about in June and,
to me it was the logical next step in my work.
As for my qualifications well..
- I have 1 year of law school - Sean came along so I stopped to raise
him. Law School taught me to see multiple shades of gray - something I
think
we all need.
- My original major in college was Computer Science. HTML is really no
different then Pascal or Fortran. The syntax is different but the idea
is the same.
- I have HTML knowledge. In fact I really enjoy writing pages. I've
helped several of my friends write or rewrite pages. I keep up to date
with HTML by taking classes at Virtual University.
- I've been "doing" genealogy since 1978. I first became interested in
genealogy in my teens when I had to do the research to achieve my First
Class badge in Girl Scouts (equivalent to an Eagle Scout badge). I only
had to go back 6 generations. I easily achieved this on most of my
lines. Since then ,I've managed to get my family back to the 1100's
and if
I can make a connection will be able to get the tree back to
Charlemagne. While my family hasn't established Florida (or lived in
it) - they have
pioneered Mass, Pa, N.H., Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. They've
fought in every war we've been in from Queen Anne's War (French and
Indian) to World War II.
- I as well as a few others, am trying to get a little town,Weatherly,
in
Pennsylvania online. http://members.xoom.com/Weatherly . We are trying
to get the cemeteries in the area in one spot so that they won't be
lost. Many of these cemeteries are
now hidden and sadly badly descimated and no one can see them - let
alone know where they are. Since these counties go back to the 1600's
and many of the settlers were there in the 1750's (and earlier) the
cemeteries are quite old. We all feel it would be a wonderful find to
the lost searchers. I have managed to partially put one of the
cemeteries on line - Union
Cemetery. http://www.geocities.com/Heatland/Ranch/9788/Union.html
- I also try and do lookups for people in the Carbon and Schuylkill
area.
As for what I think we need to do..
- The Advisory Board first needs to set up set of rules which can be
re-interpreted as our needs change. These rules shouldn't be so black
and white as to not allow the co-ordinators - the backbone of our
project- some level of creativity and control over their pages.
- Set up a main page which is very user friendly. By this I mean user
friendly to the computer illerate.
Not allpeople are as well versed with the net and its abilities as we
are - and to have a site which is compatiable with all speeds of
computers and types. (if possible). Obviously we don't want to make the
page so simplistic as to make it unreasonable but some considerations
should be taken.
- The pages should be the "property" of the co-ordinators. The site the
"property" of the owner (maintainer). The contributions the "property"
of the contributor.
- Have a sense of community with not just the co-ordinators but the
searchers as well. Too many times the searchers try to contribute and
can't because of the co-ordinator or there is nothing like it on the
county page- or the searchers aren't asked. It's been my experience
many of the searchers love to contribute their finds. To be honest, if
I want something on my page I flat out ask the searchers for it, and
they gladly give it or tell me how to obtain it.
-Try to set up a digital library for each county. While yes we have the
archives project which I recently became apart of. I think, if each
county had it's own TOC file it would really help the archives project
as well as the county site and the searcher.
- I agree we should try and get as many documents as we can on-line. I
see the www as the wave of the future in genealogy and the quicker we
get the documents on-line the better.
- have our email addresses - co-ordinator's, the State Co-ordinator and
the Assist. in some place on the site. Sometimes people can't get one
and would like an alternative. Also, we do have other lives (heaven
forbid *g*) and sometimes we go on vacation (what's that??).
Sorry this is so long
