Hypothetical Situation #1...
Yellow Fever County CC seems to fall off the face of the
Earth. They have not emailed or called in with a problem.
The site is not being updated. The SC finds a replacement
CC. The original CC comes back and explains problem. Who
decides what should happen? Is there an appeal to the
decision?
Hypothetical answer: You have a job, you don't come to work, you don't
answer your phone or mail from your employer, the employer hires a
replacement, you show up for work... sorry!
Of course there ARE extenuating circumstances but those should not exceed
30 days. I could communicate with SOMEBODY in that time by putting a
message in a bottle <G>.
CCs have to understand their commitment to the project and our "customers."
The problem would not escalate to the point of replacement if the CC
communicated with the SC.
Any appeals to the SCs decision should be handled by the advisory board or
through the grievance procedure.
Hypothetical Situation #2...
Melon County CC refuses to post queries and does not have
logos on the main page. What should happen? Where does
complaint go? Should you care?
Hey! you know how I feel about queries BUT it is part of the job. Mandated
by USGW guidelines/By-laws. No excuse is acceptable.
Hypothetical Situation #3...
Old Hammock County CC uses the site to promote a commercial
enterprise. What happens? Discussion? Mediation?
Dismissal? SC decides? What if it looked worse than it
was?
This is a grey area, USGW National By-laws state:
ARTICLE IX. GUIDELINES/STANDARDS FOR WEBSITES/MEMBERS
Section 1. All websites shall include prominent display of The USGenWeb
Project logo on the home page. A state project logo may be required
depending on the guidelines/standards in effect for that state.
Section 2. Solicitation of funds for personal gain is inappropriate. This
is defined as the direct appeal on the home page of any of the websites
comprising The USGenWeb Project for funding to do research, to pay for
server space, to do look-ups, etc. A website may, however, acknowledge any
entities who may host their website (i.e., provide server space at no cost)
or may include a link to a coordinator's personal page on which they offer
research services for reimbursement. The acknowledgement may include a link
to the hosting entity's website.
[Pertinent verbiage:]
A website may list research materials
and/or services which may be for sale/hire, either by the coordinator, a
genealogy society, or others. Such a listing shall not be on the main web
page for the site, but may be linked from the main web page. It may be
appropriate to include a disclaimer that the coordinator and The USGenWeb
Project do not guarantee the contents of such research materials and/or the
expertise of any professional researchers.
Generally, when a complaint is made (USGW) Regional Reps look
at the site
and advise the board. In some cases the site CC has been told to modify the
page etc. In other cases, it was found that the site was not in violation.
Each alleged violation must be treated separately
