Part of the 17th c. English pacification of Scotland was the hunting down
of McGregor children and sending them as house servants to Northern
Ireland. Indentured servants were no better than slaves, I often wondered
what happened to those children. As the song goes - "Though they rob us of
name and pursue us with beagles ..... McGregor despite them will flourish
for ever" !!
The Caribbean holds many descendants of deported rebel Irish too,
particularly in Grenada and in Jamaica where descendants are called
"redshanks" from the effect of the sun on fair skin. The Irish and Scotts
were valued less than African slaves because they could not be worked as
hard as the Africans.
