This message is for Claudette Bagan, Maureen Batty and James Mullan in particular.
Claudette, in looking through some of my old notes, the following information showed up in
the 1850 census for Vinegar Hill: John Began, age 32 from Ireland, and listed as a miner.
In additon there was Bridget 20, Joseph 8, Patrick6, Thomas 4, and Mary 2. Would this be
the family you were inquiring on? I don't know their relationship to any other
Maureen & James I also found the following from my old notes: in the 1860 census for
Vinegar Hill. Mathew and Sarah Beggin (both age 22), and John age 2, were shown as living
with Bernard Beggin, age 35. Mathew was listed as a nephew to Bernard. I believe this
Bernard to be the brother of Joseph Beggin my gggrandfather. However, there are several
questions that I don't have answers for. In 1860 Bernard would have been 45, and
although the ages for both Mathew and Sarah are shown as 22, based upon the date of
Sarah's death listed on her tombstone she would have been 32 (Died 1905 at the age of
77). If Mathew was a nephew, this begs the question, was his father, a brother of Joseph,
John & Bernard , and if so, what was his name?
The children listed for Mathew and Sarah in the 1870 census were, John 12, Margaret 9,
Sarah 5, Thomas 3, and Bernard 1.
James, you had mentioned that in checking the 1880 census for Thomas Beggin, my
ggrandfather, that a Kate McGrath, age 27, a widow was living in this household, and was
listed as a niece. Interestingly, in the 1860 census, a grandchild, Catherine, age 8 was
listed as living with Ann Beggin my gggrandmother. They may be one and the same. Is there
yet another son of Joseph and Ann that I'm not aware of? The mystery seems to grow.
