The Black and Tans were so-called because of their uniforms---black and
tan---which also corresponded with a kind of hunting dog. The organization was
composed of discharged English soldiers and was notorious for their brutality.
Even the English Regulars looked down on them because of their ruthlessness.
Black Irish pre-date the Chistians . Vikings, Normans, Saxons, Spaniards. If
you read the ancient tale of Deirdre of the Sorrows---composed long before any
of theose people arrived---you find a description of Naoise, Deirdre' s Love.
He is pale of skin, Rosy-cheeked, red-lipped, and black of hair. Th anciient
Irish used the term "Black" Iin reference to colour of the hair. The Black
Irish are represented by such people as Tyrone Power, Rory Calhoun, Ann
Blythe. All of whom fit the description of Naoise of ancient times. The Red Irish
are exemplified by Maureen O' Hara(Fitzsimons), Errol Flynn, and John Kennedy.
Another, less illustrious example, was Black Jack Ketchum. He was pale
complexioned, blue-eyed, with jet black hair. He was somewhat paler when the
Vigilantes strung him up.
