Hi, John Elton, and others: Check Portland, Maine. As soon as British
industrialists completed the Grand Trunk Railroad in 1853 from the big Atlantic Ocean
port of Portland Maine direct overland to Montreal, you would avoid the
frozen St. Lawrence river in winter or the horrible sail up that river otherwise.
Ultimately Grand Trunk extended across all of southern Ontario, Michigan to
Chicago. (My ancestors built wheels and other railway gear in the Grand Trunk
