Q. Who am I? I am the person who owns, designed, built, and operates the
website. I am also the owner of www.atavus.org
You don't hear from me very often on the forum because frankly I am very busy earning
a living and raising a young family. Also my primary research interests are the Leitrim
and Cavan border area however I do have a general research interest in Fermanagh. My
search in Fermanagh is extraordinarily difficult since I have little to work with and so I
spend most of my available research time focusing on the area where my ancestors left
Ireland from when they left 150+ years ago. Hence I don't post very often on the
fermanagh-gold forum. I read the fermanagh-gold forums as often as I can and enjoy reading
them a lot (especially the ones with references to Johnstons in the hope that one day
something might "pop up" that is relevant). The fermanagh-gold forum is unique
in my experience with a group of people (Vi, DH, Vynette, Dee, Soopy, Bud, Janet, and many
others) who deserve as much support as possible because they give so much freely to
others. My small contribution to the foru!
m is the fermanagh-gold.com
website (and now atavus.org
Q. Do I have permission? Yes, every document provided to me on www.fermanagh-gold.com
provided with permission.
The entire purpose of www.fermanagh-gold.com
is to make genealogical information freely
available to everyone. www.atavus.org
is just another way of doing this.
The people who have provided the information to me have the same desires, to make the
information freely available to everyone.
has a larger purpose than fermanagh-gold.com
. It is to support not only
Fermanagh but also other counties and even other countries.
It is also ultimately (hopefully) to support multiple people contributing and
administering various sections of the site.
The way that www.fermanagh-gold.com
is written means that only I can really administer it
and maintain it.
I am thinking of the future with atavus.org
and migrating everything to it so that it is
not reliant upon just me.
I don't want all of the information provided by people to go the way of
where it is at risk of disappearing because of reliance upon one person.
Q. Do I have agreement? I do not need agreement per se as the www.fermanagh-gold.com
website is not owned or operated by the FG community.
However I do hope that this improvement in access to the information that is on
and now also on atavus.org
is taken positively.
Hopefully the expanded capabilities on www.atavus.org
will also mean that much more
information will be available over time for everyone.
Q. Is it from the goodness of my heart.?Yes, the www.fermanagh-gold.com
website has always
been done by me, paid for by me, and will always be so. atavus.org
is no different. There
is money involved, my money. I fund everything related to www.fermanagh-gold.com
Some unasked questions...
Q. Will the fermanagh-gold.com
website disappear? NO! The fermanagh-gold.com
not disappear however once atavus.org
can do everything (and more), then
will just point directly to atavus.org
. There is no sense maintaining
two sites once there is no longer a need. The piece that is missing on atavus.org
proprietary search engine that is on fermanagh-gold.com
. Until I have written the new one
website will remain as is.
Q. Will atavus.org
be a paid service? NO! It will NEVER be a paid service while I have
anything to do with it. I use paid services for my research but I actually think it's
wrong to charge for information that should be freely available to everyone.
Q. Why another website? Why not just improve fermanagh-gold.com? fermanagh-gold.com
designed primarily as a search engine and distribution method for all of the information
originally collected and distributed by Vynette Sage (by postal service at her own cost).
The site expanded over time with contributions by others in the community. It was never
meant to be able to serve photos or provide capabilities to browse the available
information. It was never meant to be editable via the web or managed by multiple people.
The amount of effort involved to improve fermanagh-gold.com
further (by reinventing the
wheel in many cases) just wasn't warranted so I spent 12 months looking around at
other existing solutions and then settled on one which I could customise to my specific
needs to support everything on fermanagh-gold.com
and more. The result of that search is
which is finally ready for use today.
I hope that these answers remove any fears of change relating to the fermanagh-gold.com
website and the new atavus.org

I'm not sure. Depends on where you're going with this. Do
you have the appropriate permissions? It was a total surprise to me, is everyone on FG in
agreement? Was this out of the goodness of your heart, or will there be money involved?
And finally, who are you?
Christina, Vi, DH, I await your opinion.
