I also read this book, unfortunately some years ago so would have to
re-visit to recall all the details. Did enjoy it, and recall I was sceptical
of the 'west coast Africa' slant, too.
As Pitheas discovered the world was round about 300BC, which was widely
known throughout the ancient world, I am always puzzled why it took so long
for the 14th century navigators to catch up with this science!

I've not read the book "1421" but I did see the
documentary based on it a
few years ago, which from memory included interviews with the author.
