This last trip, I bought 2 SIM cards, one for NI and one for the
Republic. It would not have been much more to pay for an international
add on to my home cell, and I also would not have had the bother of two
numbers for my friends to keep track of.

I know my roaming charges but still buy a 'local' SIM to avoid any
'discrepancies' with billing!
A 20euro SIM costs me 20euro and I get 20euro of call credit and can top
it up by 5euro if needed...or 10 or 20 etc and can even use unused
credit when home (at roaming rate!) and no bills.

My son went from Ontario Canada to Italy four years ago with his trusted
Blackberry. Took lots of pictures and send them back home, as well as
emails and texts - shock when he got back - around $5,000.00. So beware of
taking your own phone with you. I imagine the sending of lots of pictures
was very costly.
