I am working on an update to Fermanagh for my Administrative Map
website. I am adding a complete list of the townlands, and, through the
kind efforts of some of your fellow Fermanagh researchers, I am also
able to add the boundary maps of a number of the townlands.
As all of the 3 on-line databases for Irish townlands (Sean Ruad,
Ireland's Ancestors and PRONI) include quite a few errors, I have been
double checking the database with the paper version of the 1851 Census.
As you may be aware, Sean Ruad and Ireland's Ancestors are based on the
1851 census data, whereas PRONI is based on data used for the later
The Griffith valuation was carried out at the same time a resurvey of
Ireland was occurring and Griffith took the opportunity to reorganise
many townlands into different Civil Parishes, as well as deleting some
and adding others. However as he had been explicitly told not to do
this, he was stopped after a short time. Hither-too I have only found
these changes in the NE of Ulster and at the time I did the boundary
maps in Fermanagh I did quite a few spot checks and found no issues. I
was therefore very surprised when I did this in more detail, to find
that Griffith had made some very significant changes to the Civil
Parishes just to the east of Enniskillen. I haven't fully sorted this
out yet, but the main changes seem to be in Cleenish, Clones,
Derryvullan, Derrybrusk Enniskillen and a few parishes in Aghalurcher.
My map currently reflects the Griffith definitions of Civil Parishes and
as part of this update I am intending to include the parish outlines for
both the 1851 and Griffith definitions.
In order to check this more thoroughly I need an accurate list of which
townlands are in which civil parish for the Griffith valuations.
Unfortunately the PRONI database is particularly error prone and many
townlands are missing, my estimate is that it is short by 100- 150, with
most starting after "Tu..." or which have multiple parts (East, West
etc) missing. Cathy B has sent me a copy of a list that was sent to her
and while it is obviously based on Griffith, it may come from PRONI
(although it has differences) as it has similar errors and is also
If you do have a complete list showing the Griffith version of the
Fermanagh Townlands, could you please send it to me?
