I would like to contrast Cliff's experience with my own.
I have spent a bucket load on FTDNA and Ancestry on DNA testing over the years for myself
and close relatives.
I've done the Y-DNA 111 test, the mtDNA test, and FTDNA family finder, and the
Ancestry autosomal DNA test.
I've tested not only myself, but also my parents and a 3rd cousin.
The Y-DNA 111 test has been useless in my instance with nobody even remotely matching
(other than my dad and his 3rd cousin who I already personally knew) within the past 500+
I can't even get back before 1800 in Ireland with my male line, so a distant closest
possible match in the 1400's somewhere in Scotland isn't useful to my family
Likewise I have found the mtDNA test useless with never finding a single match to anyone
In contrast I have had extraordinary success with both the FTDNA family finder and much
more success with the Ancestry autosomal test.
I have got in contact with many 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins on at least 6 of my family lines
due to the autosomal testing; people that I never knew existed.
I have learned a lot about many of my family lines, not just my paternal line, and made
contact with some wonderful cousins living in Australia, New Zealand, USA, and the Isle of
One thing I do agree on is that the ethnicity test results (60% irish, etc.) are not much
use for genealogy, and not very accurate on either FTDNA or Ancestry, and are just a bit
However autosomal testing is a whole lot more than an ethnicity result, it is quite useful
for finding 2nd, 3rd, and 4th cousins that you didn't know about.
It seems that different people have different experiences with the various DNA tests and
testing companies. It isn't a one size fits all proposition.
For me Ancestry autosomal testing has been the best and their database far exceeds
FTDNA's autosomal database.

The most valuable DNA tests continue to be Y-DNA and mtDNA.
