It certainly is cavalier!!
In my case.... if one looks at all the /stone photos I've taken, and put
on IGP so that other people can benefit FREELY from it WHY should people
think they are allowed to just take them and publish
whatever they want in a book on their family?
Yes I know people just take them and stick them on their Ancestry tree
WITHOUT even a thank you!
A bit of courtesy would be to even say Thank You.. but NO!
..... and, I speak mainly of Co. Monaghan, IF they had said Thank You I
would have had more information on "their" kin!! In some cases, their
tree was WRONG so I just leave them to it!!
A few have emailed and asked for permission to Publish, which was freely
So...we come to the "Fair Usage" policy! IF we then accept that it is
Fair for one person to copy a whole chapter.... this means that another
person can copy another chapter, another person the next chapter,
another the next until the whole book is copied! NO, NO, NO!
If you take a person that has gone to a Cemetery, photographed and
recorded all the g/stones, then goes home and starts creating a book
with the photos and text for each... HOW MUCH has been invested in
getting this work together BEFORE it is then taken to a Publisher to get
printed, plus I.S.B.N, advertising etc etc?? HOW MANY need to be sold
just to break-even??
NO the person is not going to become a Best Seller and may never even
recoup the investment, and even LESS likely if people take photos of
pages to distribute!!
Coming to the Atlas.... Yes a pity it is no longer published! WHY? Not
viable PLUS cannot compete with the OSI which are every bit as good if
When I bought the plot for my house I even had to send OSI maps of my
plot, boundaries, etc etc and the maps at OSI had to be updated before
THEY granted permission for this portion of land to be made into a
separate entity.. the maps at OSI are a continuation of Griffiths Survey
and record EVERY change in towns/countryside, roads, in past 150 years
and even include rights of ways, many no longer used, by people making
their way to towns etc before roads were made!
WHERE did Philip's get their information from??? OSNI.. by licence!!!!!

That's a very cavalier attitude.? Especially given the number
of people on the
list who are actually creating works, investing time and effort in doing so
and releasing them to the public so that other people can benefit from it.
While a copyright is designed to protect a work, it also records the person/
persons who actually created it.? In many cases, making contact with the
copyright owner and explaining what you want to do with their work, will
result in permission to use it.?
