First welcome. Can I suggest you download the demo version from the
FH site to check any of your questions you may also find the animated
demos/tutorials over at fhug.org.uk useful.
I have answered your questions as best as I can below.

None that I am aware of.
a. Am I correct that an Event must be designated as FAMILY or
INDIVIDUAL? So, if I want to track VACATIONS
Personally what I would probably do for this would be to set up an
Individual event linked to a shared note with details and then copy
the event to all concerned family members.

Personally I use Village, County, Country, for the USA you might need
an additional level, but try to be consistent.
c. How many characters can be entered into the VALUE field of the
Again no practical limit, but as for places its good to be consistent
and keep sentence information in notes.
d. Is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to create
Event/Attribute to track: Quotes (
None at all. It would probably be an attribute
rather than an event
as it would have a value associated.

I also export this info (to an Excel spreadsheet, or comma delimited file,
Currently you can not query on Events directly, but it is possible to
pull up and save to CSV any event information, but only as 1 line per
person, not one line per event. There are work arounds for this.
f. In the manual for version 2.2, on page 61 of the Notes Tab says,
have already seen that notes can be associated with events or
You can attach local and shared notes to people, families or events
and attributes with in people.
a. Let's say I know there's a family story that references
but I don't remember which individual told the story. Can I use a search
tool to find a particular string of text in a memo/note? (For some
programs, memo fields are not searchable)
The text search will search anywhere and the new contains text
function allows you to create a query to build lists, result sets
based on that. Very handy for finding people associated by any event
with a place or address.
I am particularly drawn to this program because of being able to link a
group photo to the individuals, and identify who is who......
a. If I understand correctly, I can either LINK photos to an individual or
EMBED the photo; I understand that embedding the photo may cause the
program to slow down; is there a limit to the # of photos I can LINK
without slowing down the program?
I have not found a practical limit on linked photos. Obviously a tree
or report with hundreds of displayed photos can take a time to
process, but other than there is not a limit.
b. Can photos be linked to events/attributes? Or only to
individuals? The example in the manual (page 85) shows that we're linking
the photo of Daniel's Christening to Daniel, but we have to add a date and
a note; I would think this info is already logged as an EVENT and I hate
the idea of double data entry.
You can attach photos to events, but they are not currently picked up
on some reports. I always date my multimedia records anyway as it
helps me when working with them directly.
