You will only get the Backup on Exit prompt if data has been changed in the current FH
However, you can always use File > Backup/Restore > Small/Medium/Full Backup.
Remember a Small Backup only preserves the Gedcom file and nothing else.
The others will preserve Media too, but only if it is within the Project folder.
I advise you use Medium/Full Backup otherwise you risk losing your photos, etc.
Alternatively, simply have a general purpose backup regime for ALL your documents and not
Windows has backup tools and there are plenty of free tools to backup everything including
The other problem you have is the occasional disruption of your Project/Gedcom structure
into tmp files.
That is probably caused by some other program interacting with the files just when FH
wants to access them.
It could be an over zealous anti-virus tool, a backup utility, or perhaps Google Drive

Thank you for your help so far, I wasn’t getting the back up prompt, and the file wasn’t
created. Just a prompt would be fine as I have an external drive and a USB stick I can
use, for a back up, I find I have trouble remembering!

Those settings are OK, but ‘Small Backup’ will only backup your Gedcom file and NOT any
The ‘Backup on Exit’ prompt is only produced if the Gedcom has been changed in that
When you get that prompt click the ‘Backup’ button to create the Backup file in the chosen
Default Backup Folder.
However, you can choose a different folder if you wish in the usual Save dialogue.
I wish you would explain exactly what it didn’t do.
Are you saying you did not get the prompt, or that the Backup file was not created, or it
was not created in the desired folder?
Nevertheless, that is still not an independent backup if it is on the same disk drive and
same PC as your FH Project.
If the PC or disk drive crash then it will take both your Project and Backups together.
