An alternative approach is to use the Standardized field in the Place record for
There you can enter Smethwick, West Midlands and the Map Geo-coder will then get it
See the Records Window and Places tab for all the Place records.
Similarly for Great Barr, Birmingham, Warwickshire set its Standardized field to Great
Barr, West Midlands.
The Map Geo-coder can only work with standardized modern place names because it does not
know about all the historical county boundary and name changes.
There is a 'Map Life Facts' Plugin that uses the more effective Google Geo-coder
and can be synchronised with the Map Window.
You may be unaware of the free FHUG where this and other FH topics are regularly discussed
and alternatives suggested.

The problem is simply that Smethwick is now in West Midlands and the Geo-code has got
confused. Ironically if you had only put in Smethwick it would have found the right one.
There are a couple of ways to correct the problem if you go to the Map window for all
places on the left hand side the places will be shown.
Either drag the placename from the left to the correct place on the map or Click on the
"Enable Marker Dragging" icon (the last icon on the right) and then move the
Marker on the map to the correct location.
If you type place names in the Location field at the top and press enter it will show you
the list you can select from and you can jump the map to the correct place to move the
