What you can do with "name" is fairly limited. You can add Nicknames or
Alternate names, but your ability to add dates to particular names isn't
If you look at the All tab (on the right of the Individual Properties
dialogue) and either right click on the fact concerned or click on the +
box immediately to the left of the fact you will see what data can be
attached to a fact or are already attached to the fact.
I think you would find it really useful to be able to add Custom
Attributes - under Facts. You could create an "alternative spelling"
attribute to which you could add sources and dates - presumably for your
purposes you would enter the birth (and possibly death) dates of the
individual against this attribute (e.g. "frm dd/mm/yyyy to dd/mm/yyyy").
(Unless you know they changed the spelling of their name during their
life when you would enter the relevant dates.) You could then use that
attribute in Queries etc.
You can enter multiple "alternative spelling" attributes against an
individual. But queries that try and look at more than just the first
instance of an attribute get complicated!
If you always put the "actual used" Surname in the Name box, you could
just do a query sorted by say birth date. (But if the dates for
beginning of life are a mix of blanks, birth dates, christening dates
and baptism dates, your query will get quite complicated.)
