Firstly may I wish the list every success and send congratulations to the
list owner - I hope the delivery wasn't too painful!
My 3 x great grandfather was a William Doe who moved to Bramford from the
Stowmarket area. Following the death of his first wife, Sarah, he married a
Margaret Sarah MacNaughton in Bramford in 1829. I have not found a marriage
for Margaret Sarah and the unknown Mr. MacNaughton, but she was first
married to a Josiah Stubbin in 1809; he died in 1820 and is buried in his
home town of Raydon, Suffolk.
Margaret Sarah's maiden name was Hobart, the second daughter of John Hobart
and his wife Elizabeth nee Cross - born 1785 at Stowmarket (2 years after
William Doe was born there, so wondered if they knew one another before
their eventual marriage). John Hobart was an artist, as was his son John
Robert. When William Doe died in 1847 in his Will he leaves his wife,
Margaret Sarah "all the paintings she brought with her from her father's
home". Decent of him!
I wondered whether anyone on the list might know where (other than the
Museum at Woodbridge) any of either of these artists paintings might be?
They are mainly of horses I have been told.
Also can anyone tell me whether there are any graves in the Churchyard at
Long Melford for George Whittle and his family? He was owner of the Matting
Factory, and his son, George, married Mary Ann Louisa Doe who was the
grand-daughter of William Doe.
We hope to be coming up to Suffolk for a week's holiday in May, and both
want to see some of the places our respective families originated that we
haven't already visited.
Hope to hear from someone.
