Sidney Rhodes is my brick wall.
I have been researching the air crew of PB477 LQ-B 405 Pathfinder Squadron
shot down near Rohrau, Germany, the night of 02 Jan. 1945. My uncle was
part of that 7 man crew. Five members of this crew died (including my
uncle). Rhodes and another airman, W/O1 Plyley lived. I have been
fortunate in finding information on most members of this crew - all except
F/Eng. Sgt. Sidney Rhodes RAF(VR). This is what I know about him:
- Service No. 1680670
- He was captured by the Germans 02/03 Jan. 1945 and interned at Stalag Luft
1 POW Camp, Barth Germany along with his fellow crew member, Plyley.
- They were freed by the Russians in May of 1945
- I found 2 entries in supplements to the London Gazette for Rhodes: I dated
Jan. 1946 where received his commission as a Flt. Sgt. - two service nos.
are shown for him; the second entry is dated Oct. 1952 and shows his
commission as Flying Officer..only one service no. is shown (201964).
A search on the Free BMD shows 3 birth registrations for a Sidney Rhodes and
only in East Yorkshire:
RHODES, Sidney, March Qtr., 1908, Bridlington, East Yorkshire ref. 9d 378
RHODES, Sidney, June Qtr., 1912, registered Sculcoates, ref. 9d 358
Mother's Maiden Name: McQuade
RHODES, Sidney, March Qtr., 1916, registered Sculcoates, ref. 9d 368
Mother's Maiden Name: Cropper
One possible marriage:
Marriages September Qtr., 1934
These were the only entries on the Free BMD using "All Districts" (of
England); another search specifying East Yorkshire produced the same
It appears that he led a rather 'undercover' life. His name does not appear
on any other squadron list except 405 Squadron. I have also been on many
war talk sites without success.
I would be so grateful for some help in narrowing down these entries. As it
stands now, I don't know when he was born or who his correct parents are.
