We are not sure whether this is the correct
list for the person we are trying to trace.
We are looking for a 'James Howden' who went to
New Zealand on the Black Eagle in 1861 .
"Black Eagle: Departed Plymouth 17 August 1861.
Passed Cape Verde Islands with seeing them.
Crossed Equator September 13th in 230 30 West longitude.
Passed Cape of Good Hope in 140 South.
Sailed past Van Diemen's Land Nov 5th.
Passed Three Kings Islands about ten miles to the north.
Arrived in Auckland 19th November 1861."
He should be on the 1861 British census which
would tell us where he was born.
Not quite sure where except it was indicated
that towards the north of England and that
the town of Howden was a possible starting point -
but we are not at all sure that this is correct.
Calculating from his date of death and age at that
time he was born most likely either in the year 1836 or 1837.
He was a watchmaker and / or jeweller in New Zealand
so presumably he trained in this business somewhere on
England before he came to NZ .
He arrived in New Zealand and set up his business.
In 1866 he married.
His first child, James Howden was born in 1868
and a further 7 chn were born in this family.
Any information will be most welcome.
Regards and best wishes to all
