I am still trying to help my friend (new to genealogy) find information on
her father FRED SYGROVE born 1917 at Ottringham to Sarah Sygrove, father
unknown. She has found out lots of information about the family of William
Sygrove and Mary (1st wife) and Hannah (2nd wife) and knows that Sarah went
on to marry William Sharpe in 1920, but every time she asks anyone about
her father and Sarah she seems to run into a brick wall of silence. Her
father passed away several years ago and never spoke of his early years but
he was not brought up with his mother. Jackie would like to find out about
his early years, presumably in Ottringham. She has found that he worked on
a farm (not known where) especially with horses, in his youth. . There are
no admission records for Ottringham school unfortunately but we haven't
looked at a workhouse yet. Did they take babies?? It would seem unusual
for him to go to a workhouse when his older half brother (also Sarah's
child) went to live with Sarah's sister.
Is there an Ottringham local history group like the one at Bishop Wilton
that may be able to help??
So far she knows that he was born in 1917 and after WW2 went to the Isles
of Scilly to work and then worked in a circus for a couple of years and
then came to New Zealand in 1950. He may have served in the East Yorks
regiments during the war because when he went back for a visit in 1986 he
went to France to see the Memorial (he wrote a diary of that trip but
mentioned very few names) to the East Yorks Regiment at Bayreux.
If anyone knows anything about Fred Sygrove son of Sarah Sygrove, Grandson
of William Sygrove who had the Railway Pub in Ottringham till 1925 we
would appreciate the info very much.
