and hello to Ben Hocking
I was pleased to get your messages. Ages ago I signed up for
ENG-CORNWALL-RUAN but this is the first message I've received.I wonder if
I'm correctly on the list.
Ben, I am also descended from John Hocking, via his daughter Elizabeth Sarah
Hocking who married James Scott Stone. John Hocking was my GG Grandfather.
I have visited Bone Gap and Albion several times since my first visit in
1957. I've seen oodles of Hockings in the Bone Gap cemetery and have some
photos of some of the grave stones.
My file has the same dates for Richard Hocking and Amy Johns that Carol
Hughes has (I got them from her!). Where did you get the 1781 and 1785 dates
for Richard and Amy?
I have Richard's parents as James Hocking and Mary Bennatts or Bennato.
I have Amy Johns parents as George Johns and Amey Roberts. I have George's
parents as George Johns and Mary Cock.
I was in Ruan 18 months ago and met Carol, who is a wonderful source and
wonderful person. I visited the Berruppa Farm, then for sale, in which the
Hockings lived prior to leaving for the USA. There is also the Ardevora Farm
which was a Hocking homesite. It is a fun visit to Ruan. Unfortunately I
lost my video cassette with all my film coverage, so maybe I should go back.
Finally, I have the following childen of Richard Hocking and Amy Johns
Elizabeth Sarah (my line)
Which is your line, Ben?
All for now. Let me know more about your Hocking findings.

Hi Carol, I am not sure how I get these emails but I do - quite
interesting. You might be able to help me with some information. I
have been looking for my great-grand parents marriage registration. I
gather they were "married" (according to my grandmother's birth certificate
and the greatgrandmother's death certificate) in St Austell 17.11.1871.
She was Mary Jane Hancock, born 11.11.1852 in Bunny, St Austell, Cornwall
and married John Varcoe who was born about 1850 in Sentlew, Cornwell. They
came to NZ in 1874. I have looked in ChCh (New Zealand) at the Family
HistoryCentre (Church of the Latter Day Saints) but have not found a match.
Someone has suggested they may have been Methodists and that the Family
History Centre would not have those records. I am not sure how this works.
I have Mary Jane Varcoe's birth certificateand the people at Four Corners
Search got that for me.
Now my question, Is there a place in Cornwall that might have these
records? If there is, could you please let me know and an address etc.
You might know a website I don't. Being so far doesn't help. Mary Jane
Hancocks parents were William and Susanna (formerly Common) and I have not
got far with that!
Any ideas for the marriage certificat would be most welcome. I don't
expect you to go to any trouble, but living there and having an interest you
might easly have something that could help.
