Is this your Mary Ann (John) Chappell in the 1881 census?
If it is the right family then maybe the marriage took place in
Gloucestershire. Where have you looked for a marriage record?
Have you looked at the GRO marriage index? (St Catherine's index)

I've just joined the list and I'm researching the surname of JOHN in the
Haverfordwest and Pembrokeshire area. My maternal g.grandmother was Mary
Ann JOHN whose parents are believed to have originated from Haverfordwest.
Mary Ann JOHN herself was born in Rhymney, Mon. about 1842, but I've been
unable to find a birth or marriage record for her (she married Jonah
Chappell in 1868). So if anyone else is researching the JOHN's and might
have any suggestions or links, please contact me.
