Dear Dr. Reg,
There was a Samuel, a mariner, who was 34 in the 1881 census. He lived at
School Lane, Aberystwyth, Cards. at that time and was born Troedyraur. Is
this likely to be a match?
Please, have you located the person who gave you the info. for David Owen

What is going on here ?
Daniel Davies born 1826 at Aberystwyth, CGN was Master of the "Hermoine "
which foundered off Pernambuco on 1 Nov 1870. Master caused the loss (but
the Naval Court at Pernambuco could not decide upon his wilfulness or
criminality). The Master behaved in such a manner that no reliance could
placed in him. He might easily have taken ship and cargo into
refused to plead or answer any questions. Certificate suspended for
Samuel Owens born 1846 at New Quay, CGN was the mate of the "Hermoine". At
the Naval Court at Pernambuco his certificate was suspended for 6 months,
having given his evidence most unsatisfactorily and shown a
indifference to the safety of the ship and ignorance of the duties of a
mate. His 1876 address: Nanty, Cardigan. (Where is this ?)
