I used the 1881 Census to have a look at the "neighborhood" in Borth, with a
view to finding the public houses of the time, although a bit later than
when your Thomas was producing children there. I realized right away that
the census place was not "Borth" in 1881 but, rather, as David Rowlands
mentioned, it was listed as 'Cyfoeth y Brenin'. The only person listed with
the occupation of "publican" in 1881 was at a place called "Friendship
There were a few other possibilities (Railway Inn, Victoria Inn, Prince of
Wales Inn and the Black Lion which was also a 6-acre farm) but the heads
were all listed as "innkeepers", not "publicans".
So, I believe the birthplace as given when registered merely referred to the
village of Borth -- not a pub named "Morfa Borth", which appears to be the
village within the township of Cyfoeth y Brenin. Sometimes, "Morfa Borth"
precedes an address (i.e., Morfa Borth, 1 Rose Place, Cyfoeth y Brenin) in
the village and there are entries of people living elsewhere in 1881
(Glamorgan) who've stated they were born in "Morfa Borth", Cardiganshire.
Hope I haven't thoroughly confused you! :-)
Your Thomas Christmas Nurse certainly got up to a lot between census
returns, didn't he? You're lucky you're finding his 'paper trail'.
suggestion would be to find the actual christening records for the two
children you have the certificates for as those entries might give the name
of the inn/pub itself. (Perhaps the LGG Parish Register or the one of the
nonconformist registers -- the Wesleyan Methodist Circuit registers are held
at the NLW -- that's how I found a baptism in a nearby village ca. 1860.)

Good morning, list
Can SKS please tell me the meaning of the following, which appears on two
birth certificates from the 1860's that I have just obtained:
Morfarborth Cyforthybrenin (the area is of course Borth, Aberystwyth, but
what about the rest of it?)
Will it help me pinpoint the actual location of the births?
