In late October and early November I made enquiries with NLW about issues with the Cynefin
and Places of Wales websites, I've now had some replies.
The first concerned where to find the dates of the maps and apportionments.
Sian Pugh replied to say the dates of both are available on Places of Wales. So I followed
Using Dinas PEM as my example just search Places of Wales for Dinas, followed by Pembroke
county and then parish of Dinas you will get 899 hits.
If you then examine the first hit (blue balloon no 1) you will find view map and view
apportionments at the end. By clicking on view map and then on more information you get
the year of the map as 1843. Sadly not the precise date which can usually be found on a
corner of the map.
If you click on view apportionments you will also get a date of again 1843. But if you
examine the preamble to the apportionments you get the date of 21 May 1841.
I do not think that any attempt was made in the Cynefin project to record such invaluable
data, which is surprising for a cartographic project.
I also raised the issue of the lack of owners and occupiers on many fields in Dinas. Those
who took part in the project will know that we were instructed not record the names of
owners/occupiers from implied "ditto" marks. This would be done automatically.
Einion Gruffudd, in the charge of the Cynefin project, agrees that this automatic updating
seems not to have happened in the this case and hopes to resolve this issue.
PS thanks to Brian Swann for his help.

Subject : Dates of tithe maps and apportionments
Some researchers will already know that the dates of tithe apportionments can be quite
different from the dates of the corresponding tithe maps.
I did point out to the National Library of Wales that neither the Cynefin project nor the
Place of Wales beta site seem to hold such invaluable (essential?) information. But I was
told that such information can be found elsewhere.
Can someone enlighten me as to where? I would like the date of the apportionment for the
parish of Dinas, Pembrokeshire.
