One of the requirements for Marriage Witnesses, was that at least one of them could sign
his name, and therefore write (and presumably read) rather than just witness by Mark.
An examination of Marriage Registers for various parishes from 1740 to 1800, shows the
same names signing as witnesses time after time.
These were from the upper echelons of the local society, and were possibly landlords or
employers of those marrying.
It is suggested, that in some cases, those that signed their names, (as it was a legal
requirement under Cannon Law to provide one) were paid for their services.
An useful source of income.
For 1790, my opinion (for what it is worth) is that there is normally no family connection
with both witnesses.
I am happy to be corrected.

Is there an order in which the witnesses to a marriage are listed on a parish record? Is
the first witness a witness for the groom and the second witness for the bride? When
trying to figure out if there might be a relationship between the witnesses and the bride
and groom, it would be helpful to know if they are usually listed in that order.
I was recently sent a parish record for a couple married at Llanelli. William A/Owbrey
and Mary Owen were married the 1st of Jan 1790 by Jeromiah Davis, Vic. The witnesses were
David Meyric and Moses John. I know there were Meyricks with property at Pembroke Dock.
According to Richard Rose, my 3rd g. grandfather, John Obray rented a Club House in High
Street from Thomas Meyrick when John O. was a shipwright there. I’m wondering if there is
any connection between Thomas Meyrick of Pembroke Dock and David Meyric of Llanelli. I
don’t have access to the estate records of the Meyrick family, but maybe someone is
familiar enough to know if David and Thomas Meyrick were related?
Thanks for any help,
Lynne in Tucson
