Dear John,
Nothing sensitive or confidential - just carelessly clicked 'reply' to John
Jones instead of 'reply to all'. Force of habit.
Here's what I wrote approximately:
Try looking for Pwll-yr-hwyaid (Duck Pond or Pool) on 1:2500 O.S. coverage.
As a general rule, 'h' was not pronounced in many southern Welsh dialects. A
quaint and sometimes confusing (to outsiders) consequence of this is that
monoglot English speaking residents of the valleys usually drop the 'h' in
their speech especially within 'informal' contexts. Pwll-y-wyad is faithful
to the local pronounciation of what the dictionary and ordnance survey map
may define as Pwll-yr-hwyaid. When in Rome .... OR Tre-arris OR 'Irwin!

===================
Dear Listers (especially Emyr and Pauline),
It's clear from John Jones's message (above) that some of the answers he
received to his original question about "Pwlly Wyad" were sent to him
privately rather than through the List. This really defeats one of the main
objects of the List -- to enable *everyone* to learn from the answers to the
questions posed on the List.
Unless they are merely "thank you" messages, or contain sensitive material,
answers should be sent via the List so that we can *all* benefit from them.
To ensure this happens, when you reply, always ensure that
Dyfed-L(a)rootsweb.com (or Dyfed-D(a)rootsweb.com) appears in the "To:" section
of your e-mail header.
Kind regards,
John Ball

Hi John.
Thanks for that very clear explanation. I will certainly do as you suggest.
I am presuming that "Pwll y Hwyad" ("Duck Pond" according to Emyr
Morgan)
was
in fact in the centre of Pembrey Village or there abouts. The family you
found there on the 1881 are my ancestors.
So before I do anything else I'll be off to the Llanelli Registrar's Office
on
Tuesday (Wonder if they are open at all this week?), I have a bunch of certs
to get there if they are indeed the Registrar for that part of Pembrey
during
the CENT 19.
Thanks again to you John, and thanks to Emyr and Pauline for chipping in
here too.
John
