Your David Harris, Photographer, is the subject of a book published by The
National Library of Wales in 1996 - D. C. Harries - A Collection of Photographs.
The C was not his given name but added to differentiate him from other David
Harries' in Llandilo. At the start of the book are photographs of David
Harries with his three sons and in a pony and trap. There is also a photograph of
his family in their sitting room. A review from the Western Mail 3-10 August
1996 gives a little more detail about the family but they were a very private
family and very little is known about them.
I visited his premises in Llandilofawr before the death, in 1976, of his son
Hugh Newton Harries. I was attracted by the old photographs in the shop
window and wondered if they might have some of my family who lived in the area. He
was very confused at this time but I saw masses of old glass plate negatives
stacked around the place even in his kitchen at the back. I was very relieved
to learn that he had left the whole collection to the National Library. When
I visited it several years later they had still not been catalogued and
unfortunately many are not identified. Since then they have printed out and bound
into volumes the most interesting ones from the thousands that were in good
condition and these books can be seen at the NLW.
Bye for now
