My grandmother was born 20 Aug 1893 in Hanover Quay in Haverfordwest.
married a railman called Billie Jones who died during WW1. After that she met
a Greek sailor (trawlerman ?), probably based at Milford, whose name I'm
unsure of but it sounds like "George Christie-Dulax". They had a child,
thought to have been born in Haverfordwest around 30 Sep 1920. I thought his
name was Christie Potter but I can't find a birth certificate under the
surname Potter, Jones, Christie or Dulax and I've searched 5 years either
side. The Greek sailor went home to Greece during the 1920's and nothing
further is known.
Christie (my father) died 12 Jun 1976, I cannot find anything to suggest that
he wasn't registered under the name Christie Potter. Does anyone have any
suggestions as to where to look next?
I had a look in my local telephone directories (Reading and Oxford) and
found the surnames Christodoulou and Christodoulides. The London directories
might have even more possibilities. But if your grandmother wasn't married
to George why should your father have been registered with George's surname?
Perhaps he was registered in your grandmother's maiden surname. Perhaps your
father changed his surname by deed poll to Potter.
