Subject: [Dyfed] everyone asleep?
Will the last one out, please turn off the light,Ta.
My late Grandma Mary Anne WHITE,nee ELLIOTT,who was born just around the
corner from me,at 269 Cowbridge road east,Canton,Cardiff,16th; november
1882,died next door but one to me,[ where Ive lived all my life] on 20th;
1968, Liked a glass of "Guinness". Well,More than a glass actually!
When I was a kid,Part of my daily chores was to go up to the "Clive Arms
Pub"in Cwbridge Road, and get "Nana WHITE's"daily Whack of Guinness!
of your "Hey you sonny,Are you over 18 years old?"This is in the days
before "Political Correctness!"
Anyway,Nana WHITE's "Whack"was 3 pints per day.[as I said,She Liked her
Then on the way home,it was "Call in at the Newsagents, for her quarter of
an ounce of "SNUFF!"
I can picture it now?The Bloke in the shop, would tip the "Snuff"into a
lttle triangular bag,and weigh it with one of those little weighing
machines, with lttle Weights on the other side.Being ever so carefull not
to give Nana White, more than her quarter of an ounce of her Snuff!
She used to give me a "Ten Bob Note"[ten shilling note, worth 50p then]for
the beer and the snuff. The beer was about 1/9d a bottle,[about 8p ]and the
Snuff was 1/3d.[6p]
In the summer months she would take one of us[myself,or my brother John,or
sister Jacqueline, over to YEOVIL in Somerset on a Sunday Excursion. This
was to see her 2 sons,My Uncle's Cyril,and Mike.[his real name was
"Herbert",But to us,he was known as Mike.
Uncle mike was a typical "Arfur Daily"Type. He'd sell you anything.[ off
the "Back of a lorry!"]
My sister Jacqueline, only told me quite recently ,WHY Nana White Picked a
SUNDAY to take us over to Yeovil?
It was because the Pub's were open on a Sunday![In England, that is]
In wales,We were "DRY" [no pubs were open on sundays. ] then!
"Seek,and Ye shall find!"
