Subject: William Chilcott and family of TENBY
I am interested in information on William Chilcott (or Chilcote) and his
William was the owner and master of a sloop called
the CHARMING JENNY of Tenby. In 1773 the vessel, on passage Dublin to
Waterford, was caught in a gale. In trying to make the shelter of Holyhead
the vessel was wrecked at Crigyll on the coast of Anglesey.
William was the sole survivor. His wife and two crew members were drowned.
The story has been greatly exaggerated and claims were made that the vessel
was lured ashore by false lights and that Mrs Chilcott was murdered - these
stories are untrue.
I have not been able to discover Mrs Chilcott's first name nor have I been
able to find a record of her burial - though I do know that her body was
recovered on the Anglesey coast.
I should very much like to hear from anyone who can assist.
