Many thanks to you all for the information about the Martletwy MATHIAS family. Now I just
hope that I can confirm them as the family I'm looking for. I strongly suspect that
the 19 year
old John, born Martletwy, living in Weston, apprentice joiner in 1861 is my 2xggf.
My 2xggf, John MATHEWS/MATTHEWS married my 2xggm Ann Bushell in Kent in 1864. I
have found him in all the subsequent censuses up to 1901 where he variously gives his
of birth a 'South Wales', 'Wales Pembroke' and 'Pembrokeshire
Weston'. He gives his trade
as 'Carpenter' or 'Carpenter and Joiner'.
As far as I can see, John MATHIAS was no longer living in Wales in 1861.
I gather from Joy's message that Weston, Martletwy might have been considered to be a
separate village in 1851. Does this seem likely to the list? Are there any other Westons
Pembrokeshire? My impression is that Weston, Martletwy would have been a small village.
PS. Thank you, Joy, for the information from the 'River Never Sleeps'. The thank
you email I
sent you was refused by AOL :(
