Lovely to hear from you again!
Thank you for those clues. Gives me something to focus on. Some of
those place names are familiar (and not just the cosmopolitan ones
like 'Ty Nant'). Old maps, here I come.
And the 1841 Joseph Jones reference gives me something to chase, too.

David, Rhodri & all,
No wonder I couldn't find my James JONES, b.1827 Penbryn CGN in the
Llanbadarn Fawr are in 1861.
The only bit I could find was the Bangor Chapel area, Llanbadarn
Fawr for 1861. I did find a John JONES at Blaen Ddol, age 25 lead
miner and family all b.Llanbadarn, Mary 24 wife, Fred. 2 & Margaret 2.
Bangor Chapel covers the following places:
Tycam, Tanyffordd, Caeau Bach, Cottage, Hafodau, Gwarllyn, Gelli,
Lettyfeinog, Caerbytfall?, Penrhywlas, Gwarhos, Bwadrain Office,
Ty Poeth, Penffrwd, Penpontbren, Caehaidd, Tanyberth, Tanrallt,
Blaen Ddol, Dolfawr, Gelli Office, Dolgoch, Ty LLwyd, Gwarfelyn,
Felyn Newydd, Neuadd, Llwyn Gwyn, Penrhywlluest, Bwlchsafan,
Blaen Cwm, Cwmcilan, Fynonwen, Glan Rheidol, Tyncown?, Blaencenan,
Tynewydd Pengeulanfelen, Pengeulan, Glanrhyd Tynoeth,
Penguelanfelen, Tynewydd, Camolwg, Troedrhiwlas, Dolgamlyn, Penlon,
Ty Newydd, Ty Nant.
Our James JONES was b.1827 in Penbryn and was in Moriah,
Llanfihangel y Creuddyn in 1871. He was a gamekeeper and with
wife Mary, dau.Mary Ellen & son Evan b.1855. Evan was a scholar age
15 in 1871 and then disappears from view. They moved on to
Penybont by 1881 & Nantygarlleg by 1901, both in Llanbadarn Fawr.
James lived with Mary Ellen after she married Evan THOMAS, smith
and we know they had 3 sons in 1901: Frederick age 4, Evan age 2
and Dyrys 5 months. An aunt remembers that Dyrys & at least one
other son survived to adulthood and used to visit her family, so
hopefully there are descendants of them and their uncle Evan
somewhere. We would love to hear from them.
David, there was a Joseph JONES b.c.1834 in Census 1841. Very poor
'faded off the page' entry in Trefeirig (Pendre Ucha?, though it
looks like Penrinuchah?) Parents John age ? mason?, Elizabeth 40?
Thomas 10, Joseph 7, William 5, Margaret 15?
