I could explore the idea that Mary had an earlier marriage, that's quite a
challenge. The pension records seem the best route to finding the answer.
I have tried TNA online but did not find any Crimean War or pensioner
records. Its possible that I wasn't searching properly.So I suppose I shall
have to visit Kew or pay a researcher to find the answer.
Thanks for responding,

The Crimean War was 1853-1856 your Mary John would be
about 28 years old when the war finnished. Could
Thomas Phillips have been her second marriage? If so
did she use her maiden name or married name when
marrying for the second time?
PS Have you tried the National Archive for his War
Record? He did have a pension!
I am searching for a marriage of Mary John(s) to
Thomas Phillip(s) a Crimean pensioner. Mary was born
about 1828 in Newport Pem. I have searched free BMD
with various spelling of John and Phillips but so far
no success. Any help would be appreciated.
