Hello Bettye
I am currently writing up all the Bateman/Richards research both Mum did and I have done
since she died. I am trying to link Thomas Richards who farmed Torbant and was married to
Anne Louisa Thomas and Thomas Williams, the father of Mary Williams Bateman. Thomas
Williams left Rhoslanog fach to Mary in his will and left Grapply (part of Slange Colled)
which I understand was a 5 acre lot closer to Trevine (but I have not been able to find
out exactly where it was) to his "beloved nephew" Thomas Richards.
John Williams died on 27 Jan 1793 in Mathry. His will names his wife as Jane and the best
match I can get is Jane Morgan. John Williams and Jane Morgan were married on 24 Jul 1750
in St Dogwells. In his will, John leaves his farm Rhoslanog vach to his son Thomas John
Williams. The other children were John, William, James, Maria Richards (w/o Thomas
Richards) and Dorothy (w/o William Richards) and Margaret Hier w/o Henry.
I think there is no doubt John and Jane were the parents of Thomas Williams and
grandparents of Mary Bateman. Therefore, the parents of Thomas Richards were either Thomas
and Maria or Dorothy and William.
In the will of John Richards (1792-1834) of Trevine cited Levi Griffiths as the occupant
of Slang Collid part of Grapply. So I would assume that John Richards and Thomas Richards
were probably brothers. John Richards also mentions Dorothy Lawrence of Llain ya Esgot in
Mathry. John's wife is Elizabeth. The best guess for her is Elizabeth Garnett and they
were married 23 Mar 1820 in Llanrhian. Dorothy was still at Llain ya Esgot in 1841, aged
60 and living as a Independent. With Dorothy was Mary Thomas, aged 55 and also
Independent. Therefore both Dorothy and Mary were probably widows but I can't find
marriages which might match.
That is my current focus.
The other clue I was following was the David Bateman and Rhosycaerau. My David was born
1800 and was a mover and shaker in Mathry with the donation and support of land and money
towards the Rehoboth Chapel. The Rev David Bateman was born 22 Mar 1807 in Moylgrove and
died in mid=1886. He married Phoebe Davies in 1840. This David was the son of John Bateman
b 1773 and Elizabeth Richards (1778-1851) who were married on 3 Nov 1794 in Moylgrove. It
occurred to me that I may be able to link this branch of Batemans into my branch of
Batemans since it is possible that some Batemans stayed up near Newport after Mynydd Melyn
was sold and my Batemans moved down near Mathry.
I did get a reply to my question but it was not really relevant.
That is my little story. Unfortunately, trying to leach any information from anywhere is
SO slow.
Thank you for having a look. I am sure you must be very busy with far more important
business after your sad loss. I do hope you have some help with all of that.
Best wishes
Lynne

Dear Lynne,
I have been intending to write and ask if your previous request gained any positive
feedback. Sadly, my husband died, aged 92, on April 17th after just over a week’s
hospitalisation, so it has been a pretty stressful time here.
I notice from a marriage list that a John Richard in 1772 married Elizabeth Nicholas at
St. Davids in 1772. That would mean that Elizabeth was, like me, an old girl when
widowed. Dorothy and Mary could therefore be theirs, or other kin. The christian name
Elizabeth does have a question mark against it..but you might be able to view the actual
record on one of your sites. There is a long time between then and the Will for
signature comparisons..but one never knows!!!!!
A Levi Griffith in 1806 at Llanrhian married an Elizabeth James.
I am sure you will get replies duplicating this information, probably bettering it.....I
did not put my reply on the Dyflist because of the personal stuff.......but perhaps these
tidbits can start your search.
Regards,
Bettye Kirkwood

Hello the List
I am looking at a will written by John Richards on 14 June 1834 in
Llanrhian. The Executrix of this will is his wife, Elizabeth Richards.
He leaves Grapply (a part of Slange Colled) to Levi and Elizabeth
Griffiths. He also mentions Dorothy Lawrence of Llain Esgot. I do not
know if Elizabeth and Dorothy were his children.
I did find a Dorothy Lawrence in Llainy Esgob in Mathry in 1841. She
was born 1776-1781. Dorothy had Mary Thomas living with her and Mary
was born (1781-1786). Both these women were classified as Independent,
so I assume they were widows.
Does anyone know anything about Dorothy and Mary and who their
husbands might have been?
Can anyone tell me anything about Slange Colled and Grapply?
Thanks
Cheers
