I thought I had sent a message from the National Archives on Thursday about
this, but I am not sure it went.
Much research by a small dedicated team over several years has finally
resulted in an amended listing of all the miners killed in this disaster.
Several names on the original plaque on the Quay at Landshipping in the
parish of Martletwy have been amended and expanded, a very few have been
added and many ages of those killed have been amended. It is now clear that
no women or girls were killed in the mine, but at least 4 miners who died
were under the legal age of 10. Another 3 were exactly 10. Altogether, 40
miners were killed.
There will be a re-dedication service split between Burnett's Hill Chapel,
Martletwy and the quayside at Landshipping. These are the details of the
timings. The reason for the date is the 175th Anniversary of when it all
happened (but at about 3.30 pm in the afternoon).
If any members wish to attend, please could they let me know in advance so
that we can gauge some idea of numbers. I suggest you reply to my personal
email address to avoid too much traffic on the list over this.
On the Friday we will be meeting at a Hall in Lawrenny for more detailed
talks and discussions about this - and other aspects of family history
research in Pembrokeshire in 2019. Again, please let us know if you would
like to come along.
Sorry for the short notice - this only got under way properly at the end of
November and finalising items over the Xmas / New Year period is never easy.
But at least we now will end up with a significantly improved record of who
really died in February 1844 and how young many of them were.
