I've been waiting to see the results of your interesting request.....perhaps
you received some Off-list.
Going back to the 1594 Extent of Cemais.....
"Bayliffe of Kemes Supra..cheef rent when payable.
The bayliffe there is to collect and gather the lorde's cheefe rent there
and yt is payable at Michelmas only nowe but by anncient recordes it
appeereth to be payable at Easter and Michellmas equallye.
Gale rent when payable. The gale rent is payable at May and Michellmas by
My own interpretation is that the bailiff of George Owen, the Lord of
Cemais, collected rents from the freeholders
once a year, but that the Lord also had a number of tenants who paid more
Ol' George was a man with his eye on his income at all times, and was
apparently grumpy that he didn't get what he considered his rightfully from
the freeholders twice a year ,and he was probably a lot harder on his lowly
tenants and wrung money out of them by any means he could. The freeholders
fought him in the Courts often, but the tenants would not have the money and
probably not the rights to do so. We have to thank him, though, for his
fascination with genealogy and recording of same.
In this case, I wouldn't be surprised if it meant something like the
servants receiving their room and board, but they had to pay a regular
(gale) rent for their child....perhaps the master of Esgairdawe was as tough
as George, particularly if the servants were not married.
Under the influence of what? in 1829?.....drink? or some other
person/religion/sect? Surely the Master would have dismissed them if they

Subject: [Dyfed] What is a "gale child?"
Hi:? I was transcribing some baptisms from the Ffaldybrenin
Chapel in Llanycrwys, CMN and came across
Sarah daughter of John and Sarah, man and maid servants at Esgairdawe was
baptized at Maesteile on the 20 July 1829 by me, Rees Jones, being a gale
Just below this entry, was written the following:? "Gentle Reader:? the
ex?ref.. gale child may ? illegitimate children are ? used when the
parties are under the influence of______."? I could not read all of the
information; it was faded.
So what is a GALE CHILD?
