Following on from Bettye and Sylvia's messages just now....
The names Walters & Waters were interchangeable in the Begelly area at
this time. The marriage between John Walters and Martha Mathias was on
25/10/1794 at Begelly, witnesses Alexander Edwards and Joseph Harts. Both parties
marked the register rather than signed it. Her maiden name was Mathias.
Fathers' details were not included on marriage registers until 1837.
John and Martha appear to have stayed in the parish and had children
baptised in the church between 1798-1810. There is no obvious baptism for a
As the baptisms are all pre-1813, John's occupation is not stated in the
baptism register. He died in 1835. His widow's occupation in the 1851 census
was "pauper collier", not unusual for an elderly woman in this coalmining
area. Some of the colliers had small holdings in the parish (1-10 acres) and
stated their occupations as "farmers" as a result. With so small a
all would have needed a second occupation, coalmining being the obvious
one. But I can find no reference to either John or Martha taking a small
holding. If Sarah said her father was a farmer then, based on this case, she was
over-egging the pudding somewhat!

Desperately seeking my 4xGrt Grandfather, John Waters; so desperate now,
that I'm chasing down all-County mentions of any John Waters in somewhere
near an appropriate timeframe. His daughter, Sarah, was born about 1815,
definitely lived in Brecknockshire - she was tried there in Brecon and
transported to VDL in 1833, when she was 17yrs of age. Her death cert in Oz, stated
Father's name John, occupation - Farmer, Mother - Martha.(All or none of
which, could be accurate.) Sarah's birthplace was given as Abergavenny, but
certainly no baptism registers there, for her.
IGI lists a marriage between WATERS John & Martha in Begelly, Pembroke in
1804 and a birth in Begelly for John Waters in 1779. This information
supplied by LDS member.
Does any Lister have access to Parish Registers, that could confirm these
names/dates, with evidence of Church, actual dates, parent names and maiden
name for Martha??
Any assistance will be sincerely appreciated.
