As David has already said, it isn't an uncommon place name.
Searching for the name Allt-ddu on Genuki brings up these listed in the
names extracted from the Kain/Oliver maps - under Description.
Just the CGN ones ;
If you feel that one of these may be 'the one' then I can work out its exact
OS reference on a modern map for you
There's also one listed in the ' Historic Cardiganshire Homes and their

I would look for 'allt-ddu'. It means 'black hillside' and there are
several I know of in Cardiganshire (the county). There must be dozens
of places of that name across Wales. The nearest I know of to Cardigan
town (if that is what you mean) is near Cors Caron (Tregaron bog).
Have you any more info as to where, exactly, Daniel James lived, to
help narrow it down?
