Hi Liz... that's an interesting coincidence, eh. I wonder if the
Gravesend Hospital was run specific for seafarers, then? Like, military
hospitals and the like?
I'm going to have to ask someone on the Mariner's list to look old Caleb
up in that Captains register and see what it says about him. I was just told
one of the ships he skippered plied the African coast... which seems to be a
tough haul for someone who was working out of Liverpool, doesn't it?
I was very interested as I have an ancestor (GG Uncle) Henry Rees of
Llanelly, who seems to have been the only member of the family to put to
(although his father, my GG Grandfather owned a couple of ships) and
died on board his ship (the Clara of Swansea) at Gravesend! His trade
described as "Coastal" in Lloyds Captains Register, but obviously there
some particular trade between South Wales and Gravesend.
