Pat, Many thanks for the article from History of Haverfordwest. We visited
the Nat. Lib. of Wales some years ago and couldn't find any reference to the
name, but here we find it listed in various books and I've now got 11 wills
or probates which at first glance appears to tie in the family from a death
in 1673 - he was a Tanner so obviously they made a lot of money from that
Simon Surman died 1791 at Scotch Well and his sister Lettice was married to
William Bowen. His aunt Ann was also married to a Bowen c. 1730 but at this
stage I don't know his christian name. Simon is mentioned in his
grandmother's will of 1743, as were 5 others after him, so put his birth
around 1730. What is interesting is the name Phillips as this appears in a
will 1815 Col. Owen Phillips and 1776 John Phillips, Dr of Divinity.
I must try and get some of the books mentioned through our reference
I'm certainly getting some 'flesh' to put around the family although I have
yet to fit them into any of our pedigrees.
Once again, many thanks Pat.
