It's now just over 6 months since I floated Dyfed-L, and immediately renamed
it the Dyflist !
The current number of subscribers is 239, of which 141 are in mail mode and 98
At the end of March, after 2 weeks of existence, I posted a welcome message
which I think is worth repeating below, there is little that I would add or
change apart from underlining my sincere thanks to you all for making the
Dyflist such a success.
However, I mustn't be complacent !
Perhaps some of you think that the list's style/content etc could be
improved, or whatever, if so then please post your suggestions to the list.
I can promise a fair hearing, and my penchant for "friendly debate" is well
Subscribers may perhaps have noticed that I have personally been quite active
in this first two weeks of the Dyflist's existence !
By that I mean responding to queries and contributing items I considered to
be of general interest.
Well, I now feel that the list is sufficiently established [with c 150 subs ]
for me to take more of a back seat and let you all have a look in !
I have got "my baby" through the weaning stage , it must now learn to stand on
it's own two feet .
As I said on day one, the content of this list is yours, make of it what you
will , I would "merely" wish it to be active, interesting and informal, with a
splash of humour here and there .
If you all "leave it to someone else" then the Dyflist will become as
nondescript as many other mailing lists, the choice is yours , as they say.
So, I ask that you all consider playing an active role on the list, by taking
opportunities to respond to general and specific queries and also posting
items you feel might interest the rest of us.
I know it can be tricky deciding whether 20 other people are about to respond
as well, it is an occupational hazard I'm afraid.
If your input involves much typing then just announce to the list that you
have the information first and invite the person asking to mail you direct for
If the answer is of general interest then post it back to the list anyway.
Sounds complicated but not really.
It is important that an initial response is via the list so that "we" know
that something is happening. Any follow on dialogue can be dealt with off list
Bear in mind that about a third of you are in digest mode, so you will lag
somewhat behind the mail mode "majority" in being able to chip in your two-
Also, would you all take the time to really consider whether you might have
any source material that could be offered to the South/West Wales Lookup
Exchange. The Dyfed relevant county pages are on
Wales Lookup Exch</A> , please check them out if you haven't already done so.
Please bear in mind that in this context significant size one name databases
are almost as valuable a resource as a PR or census return.
Or you may have a detailed file of information about a particular village,
parish or occupation, why not share that ?
Check with me first if you are uncertain whether any potential item would be
Thanks for being Dyflist subscribers
